This is the method I have always used, even back with Swap Magic You just have to esr patch it after, it is not mentioned.

You don't have to worry about patching games or bad burns, games will load faster, virtual memory card support (optional), etc. The pdf file PS2 CD>DVD was created a long time ago before esr, the site went down and I have reposted it. Loading games off the HDD fixes everything.
